Musculoskeletal disorders

What is a muscle injury?

Muscle injuries stem from many causes:

  • repetitive movements
  • bad sleep posture
  • fixed or constrained postures at work
  • intense physical effort in sports
  • lack of muscle stretching

Our body sends signals of possible musculoskeletal disorder. Stiffness, pain, numbing, frequency and intensity of pain are warning signs from you body that issues are developing or are established.

What to do in case of musculoskeletal disorders?

Often, disorders are detected too late and surgery becomes the only option.

Before needing surgery, the Canadian Center for Occupational health and Safety recommends to first restrict movement. Then, applying hot and cold compresses and certain exercises can help stimulate blood flow, soften the muscle and reduce pain.

What is implied by restriction of movement?

Restriction of movement consists in immobilizing the injured joint. This will help reduce swelling of the muscle tissue.

Immobilization can be achieved with splints, braces, bandages, etc.
